LONGBOARD FOUNDATIONS: A TWO DAY SURF ACCELERATOR COURSE

We wanted to create something bold, something that could uniquely serve the Longboard community in NZ.

And we think we've done it...

Something that understands - and recognises - the unique differences between Longboarding and Shortboarding.

Speed & Power vs Grace & Flow.

INTRODUCING BOOST: LONGBOARD FOUNDATIONS

The structured two day course takes a small group of likeminded women - at the same stage in the learning cycle - through a structured program where you’ll learn exactly what you need to know - at the right time, and in the right order - to empower you with skills to progress as quickly as possible.

Through our detailed progression roadmap our first class surf instructors will breakdown all of the technical, complicated longboard-specific techniques and deliver it to you in a step by step format that’s super easy to follow, all in a 100% non-judgemental learning environment.

And if that’s not enough, we have a fully fledged online learning portal - with detailed breakdowns, home workouts & practices - that elaborates, extrapolates and perfectly marry's the course material.

This online course content is yours to keep, forever.  Allowing you to revisit everything you've learned to practice and refine long after the course is complete.

In a structured program environment like this you’ll get the benefits of:

  • Accountability:  A time, a date, a place, for you to show up and commit to learning new skills.
  • Community: The course will be full of Longboarders all looking to improve their skills - just like you. This shared goal brings people together, and it’s a great way to meet new people.
  • Getting better faster: In a group situation you get the benefit of learning from those around you - asking questions, watching others & picking up tips.
  • Find your tribe: It’s hard to meet people with the same outlook, same values, same kinda vibe. These courses bring together people with a shared love of the ocean and surfing, creating a nurturing place to connect and belong.

WHAT TO EXPECT

As an early-stage Longboarder we start the program with the basics, uncovering the key differences between Longboarding and Shortboarding - and making the necessary adjustments to your technique right from the offset.

We’ll help you get up to speed with all the complex terminology, and teach you everything about equipment, etc to get you over that first hurdle, and give you that initial key knowledge to get you help you improve quickly.

From here, we then set out on our technical roadmap to teach you through our system.

Step by step you’ll be guided through the key steps of progression to help build a solid, technical skillset to help you progress to the next level.

  • Discover the key areas that make Longboarding so different to all other forms of surfing - and how to integrate that into your approach.
  • Style, Grace & Flow - That's what Longboarding is all about! We'll be going deep into harvesting these into your surfing.
  • Cross-step & Trim - learn how to take your very first cross steps

All with the correct fundamentals right from the off-set.

WHO IS IT FOR?

Longboard Foundations is for women that are in the early stages of learning to Longboard.

What does that mean?

It basically means that you have a base level skillset of how to pop to your feet and ride waves unassisted, and that you have your own Longboard (as these aren't provided as part of the course).

If that’s you, then you’re going to get a tonne of value from doing this program.

If you’re not quite there yet and you're learning to surf for the first time, we recommend starting with our Progressive Beginner Course first to get those skills dialled before enrolling in this course.

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN

  • The fundamental differences between shortboard and longboard surfing, and how to surf your longboard the right way.
  • Style, Grace & Flow - How to bring these three core pillars of Lonboarding into your repertoire.
  • How to Cross-Step - We'll teach you not only how to cross-step, but more importantly when & where, so you can take your first baby steps to walking the board.
  • Angled take-offs - How to take off, set your line, set your angles right from the offset.
  • The Bow & Arrow Technique - What it is, why it's super important, and thorough breakdowns and demo's
  • Wave selection, positioning, timing - Learn how to select the right waves, when & where to paddle to get yourself in the right spot more often.
  • The Pop & Cork Method - A little known technique for catching heaps more waves with little to no effort.
  • Horizontal vs Vertical surfing - how to find the right lines on the wave to surf it to its full potential.

BUT THAT'S NOT ALL...

NON JUDGEMENTAL LEARNING ENVIRONMENT

We understand how it feels to navigate within a male dominated environment where you feel stifled, self conscious, intimidated, and lack a lot of confidence (don’t worry, we’ve been there too).

Which is why we’ve created these weekend courses in the way we have.

You’ll be in a group with likeminded women at the same level in the surfing journey as you, in a nurturing, massively supportive environment throughout.

A STRUCTURED, OUTCOME-ORIENTED PROGRAM

All of the program material has been structured in a way to guide you through the key progression steps to help you improve - with the correct fundamentals - as fast as possible.

Multiple in-water coaching sessions, video breakdown, in-depth theory, online training and at-home practice.

ALL SIZES & ABILITIES

We welcome you all.

We've helped women of all ages - from fifteen to sixty+.

All abilities & agilities too.

We're here to give you the support and the guidance you need.

ONLINE COURSE - YOURS TO KEEP

We've created an entire online learning portal that compliments everything that you'll be taught over the two day course.

Detailed breakdowns, graphics and tear downs that you can come back to again and again to refresh and take at your own pace.

WHY CHOOSE THE HOUSE OF SURF?

The House of Surf was originally founded on the basis of helping more women get into the sport of surfing, to help them feel nurtured and less intimidated in the water.

And this core mission is still at the forefront of everything we do today.

Having helped literally hundreds of women in the Bay of Plenty alone (not to mention many more overseas) take their first steps into the sport of surfing, plus being home to the biggest community of women surfers in NZ (890+), we are THE go-to place for women to learn to surf - and improve - in the whole of New Zealand.

OUR APPROACH

We approach surf coaching a little differently to most...

To us, surfing is more than just pop-ups and cutbacks. Sure, these things are important (and we cover them in depth of course), but there's just so much more to surfing than this.

That's why we take a more holistic approach - using surfing as the medium to empower women in all areas of their lives.

Which is why we centre all our courses around our unique eight-pillar system that focuses on far more than technique alone, to create a safe, nurturing space for you to push yourself and enjoy everything surfing has to offer.

COVID STUFF

what if I can't attend because of covid restrictions?

If Covid-19 affects your attendance at one of our weekend courses what we’ll do is reschedule you into the next available vacant dates.

If you’re still not able to attend the future course date we'll then issue you with a full credit note for 100% of the payment amount (valid for 12 months).

So once things have blown over you can hop back in where you left off 👊

DO I NEED A VACCINATION CERTIFICATE TO ATTEND?

No, you don't need proof of vaccination to attend the course.

covid, and accomodation refunds?

This is a tricky one and out of our scope of control unfortunately.

However, many accommodation providers have very flexible terms with their bookings in relation to any Covid-19 related cancelations.

So be sure to check the terms with your accommodation if needed beforehand.

Do i have to wear a mask to participate?

Mask wearing is not mandatory to participate in the course as we'll be outdoors throughout.

If you want to wear one though you are free to do so at your own discretion.

FAQ'S

What's your cancelation/REFUND policy?

Please refer to our Terms and Conditions here.

Do you supply surfboards?

Yup for sure, we have a huge range of surfboards that you can use for the duration of the course ranging from 6ft- 9 ft.

Do you supply wetsuits?

Yes, we have plenty of wetsuits to keep you warm should you need to use one.

What happens if there's no surf?

Unfortunately, dealing with Mother Nature isn’t always predictable and flat days are a possibility (although unlikely).

In the even that the conditions look too flat for us to run the course we’ll have to postpone it until the next release date.

To give as much notice as possible we’ll make the call no later than three days out from the start date.

We can’t unfortunately take any responsibility for any costs incurred with accommodation cancelations so be sure to take that into consideration when/if booking accommodation.

HOW MANY TIMES WILL WE SURF?

Over the weekend we’ll be surfing four times.

Three of the sessions will be recorded and broken down with video analysis, and the fourth session is more of a free surf/expression session.

ARE WE USING VIDEO ANALYSIS?

Yup for sure.

We’ll be recording all the waves from the first three sessions and breaking them down in detail with the group.

What happens if it's raining?

Regardless of the weather we'll be out there making the most of it.

Does the course have a structure?

Yes. the two-day course follows our signature program material - tried and tested on hundreds of students already in our signature women's five week programs.

The material is structured in a way whereby each step builds on the last, with a cohesive progression workflow throughout.

None of the fluff, only the good stuff 👊

What level of fitness do you require?

All participants must be able to swim. A moderate fitness level is sufficient.

Where do we meet?

We meet at the House of Surf HQ in Mount Maunganui, opposite No. 27 Marine Parade.

WHAT IS THE COACH TO STUDENT RATIO?

We operate with a ratio of no more than one coach to six students - oftentimes the ratio will be much less.
