GETTING BETTER WITH THE GROUP...
Surfing has got to be one of the healthiest sports a child can do; fresh air, sunshine, and an immersion in nature - it really doesn't get any better.
But it can be an intimidating environment - especially for young girls in such a male dominated environment.
We want to change that narrative.
We're committed to getting more young girls in the water, and we've built the perfect platform to nurture them along the way.
Our Junior Girls Squad takes a small group of girls - at similar stages in the learning cycle - through a weekly squad format, where they'll connect with other young likeminded girls, learn new skills each week, build confidence, and improve.
All in a safe learning environment with qualified surf instructors breaking down all of the technical, complicated surf jargon, delivering it to your child in a fun, easy to understand format that's super easy for kids to follow.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Each week the girls squad will be given challenges and instruction to build on the skills they've developed.
Over time building up a solid technical surfing foundation week after week - something your daughter will have with her for life.
Understandably different girls will be at different levels, which is why we split the squad into groups to make sure everyone is comfortable and safe, as well as challenged throughout.
The goal of the Girls Surf Squad is to arm your daughter with the technical skills to confidently surf green waves unassisted, have the skills to trim across green waves with ease, to eventually be ready to graduate into our Academy.
With all of that being said our biggest goal - above all else - is to empower each girl with the confidence to be in the waves, and - more importantly - instil the love of surfing into their lives.
A FEW THINGS THE GROUP WILL BE LEARNING...
WHO IT'S FOR
The Girls Squad is for young girls aged 9-15 that are in the early stages of learning to surf looking to build up confidence, learn new skills, practice and refine to be able to surf comfortably out-the-back unassisted (eventually)!!
Learners all the way through to intermediate surfers.
If you're past this stage and you're surfing green waves unassisted already, don't worry that's where our Academy steps in.
You can learn more about that here.
BUT THAT'S NOT ALL...
NON JUDGEMENTAL LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
We understand how it feels to start a whole new sport where you feel self conscious and intimidated, and lack a lot of confidence (don’t worry, we’ve been there too).
Which is why we’ve created these groups in the way we have;
Your daughter will be in a group with girls at the same age & level in the surfing journey as her, in a nurturing, massively supportive environment throughout.
WHY CHOOSE THE HOUSE OF SURF?
The House of Surf was originally founded on the basis of helping more women get into the sport of surfing, to help them feel nurtured and less intimidated in the water.
And this core mission is still at the forefront of everything we do today.
Whether that's young girls at 5 years old, or women 60+, it's part of our mission to get girls surfing.
Having helped literally hundreds of women in the Bay of Plenty alone (not to mention many more overseas) take their first steps into the sport of surfing, plus being home to the biggest community of women surfers in the Bay of Plenty (600+), we are THE go-to place for girls to learn to surf - and improve - in the whole of New Zealand.

WHAT PEOPLE HAVE BEEN SAYING...
"Awesome experience!! Loz has an infectious positive vibe that makes every lesson fun.
She's a great teacher and genuinely wants you to succeed as much as you do.
I felt safe and supported the whole time and met some great girls along the way."
RACHEL GLASIER /
"I took part in a 6-week intermediate programme and it was awesome!! I learned new skills, gained much needed confidence to take off on steeper waves and left with some tangible things to work on.
Can't recommend highly enough!!!
Loz really knows her stuff and can diagnose quickly...plus she's just a dream boat to hang out with.
"Loz at House of Surf is a natural surf coach, with an ability to fine tune and tweak your surfing with so much skill and expertise.
Loz brings a level of fun and authentic passion for surfing and especially women's surfing that is contagious and so fun!
I have gained so much from only six weeks, would highly recommend Loz's classes for any level."
We approach surf coaching a little differently to most...
To us, surfing is more than just pop-ups and cutbacks. Sure, these things are important (and we cover them in depth of course), but there's just so much more to surfing than this.
That's why we take a more holistic approach - using surfing as the medium to empower kids in all areas of their lives.
Which is why we centre all our programs around our unique eight-pillar system that focuses on far more than technique alone, to create a safe and nurturing space for kids to push themselves and enjoy everything surfing has to offer.
The 8-Pillar Method
Unfortunately we don't offer refunds I'm afraid.
Due to the nature of the squad running though term time with set dates unfortunately we won't be able to offer any make-up classes for any sessions missed.
Yes, we supply soft top surfboards.
We have a range of 6,7,8,9 foot boards available. These can be hired for a small fee added to your purchase through checkout.
Yes, we do supply wetsuits.
*We have a small supply of wetsuits so get in touch early to reserve one.
The squad runs irrespective of the surf and we take the opportunity to work on all 8 pillars of surfing.
From balance training to skateboarding drills to fitness routines to paddling technique in the flat water.
Sometimes we even jump into the sea to practise our breathing.
Flat days give us an opportunity to work on the other areas often overlooked in surfing.
Our Squads run in all weather conditions, except lightning
Yes, we really do embrace the elements here at the House of Surf.
All classes are to be paid in full before commencing.
No money is excepted on the beach.
All participants must be able to swim. A moderate fitness level is sufficient.
Our normal meeting point is: Opposite number 33 Marine Parade, Mount Maunganui. However, this is subject to change depending on the conditions.
Once you're booked in you'll get all the relevant info on how to stay up to date with the location for your class.
You'll need to bring your surfboard, wetsuit (if it's cold), a water bottle and sunscreen.
If you're running late we may have shifted the class to the beach so walk to the beach to find us.
The class will start on time for the students that have arrived, so just let the coach know you've arrived and hop into the session.
Right now we're running them over three terms, but we'd love to run them through winter too, just got to see how things go.
