WORLD CLASS SURF BREAKS

TROPICAL WATER YEAR ROUND

UNCROWDED

Sound too good to be true?

Well it isn't.

We're taking a small, intimate group of surfers looking to improve on a coaching adventure to Indo's best kept secret: Simeulue Island.

A tropical Island perched just north of the Mentawaii atolls, littered with perfect waves and no crowds.

For a week straight we'll be hosting a unique surf coaching experience for a small group of intrepid surfers that want to improve - coached by our expert instruction staff, utilising our cutting edge teaching methods.

You'll be taken on an unforgettable surfing journey of a lifetime.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Yes, the Island is beautiful, and the beachfront accommodation is incredible too (more on that in a minute).

But forget all that for a moment as we're here to dissect your surfing and fast track your surf progression.

We're here to:

  • FILM EVERYTHING:  Every wave, from every session.
  • VIDEO BREAKDOWN: Nothing beats video breakdowns for uncovering any blind spots in your technique, and any bad habits that are holding you back.
  • BESPOKE TUITION: Yes, we have a structured roadmap to take all our students on, but we're here to give non-stop, bespoke individualised tuition throughout too.
  • PERFECT CANVAS: It's much easier to make big leaps in advancement when you have a predictable, perfect canvas to work with each and every time. Perfect waves allow for repetition like no other.
  • SOCIAL PROOF: You won't just be learning from our experienced coaches, but from the other students around you too. Seeing other people like you do new things, pick up new skills, facilitates learning and speeds up progression.

A TYPICAL DAY

We're here to do everything within our power to help you improve, so expect to be surfing A LOT.

As a rough guide our daily schedule will be as follows:

EARLY RISE, BREAKFAST & STRETCH

We start the day clean & fresh. Healthy, wholesome, locally sourced breakfast prepared in-house, followed by a deep stretch session.

SURF THEORY & SESSION GOAL SETTING

We're here to get you better and that means goal setting before each session, and detailed theory sessions to work through any blindspots, learn new skills, and create a plan for the session ahead.

MORNING SURF (FILMED)

As the day is young we'll chase down the best waves for the day. With so many uncrowded options for all levels we'll find our spot and hit the waves.

LUNCH BREAK

We'll make our way back to the resort during the heat of the day to refuel and refresh.

In-house cooks will prepare a hearty lunch for the group with combinations of local cuisine and western staples too.

RELAX & UNWIND

The heat of the afternoon provides the perfect canvas to rest & relax.

Reading a book by the pool, a stroll on the beach, sunbathing, or even a little nap.

This is the perfect chance to recharge before an evening of surfing.

SUNSET SURF SESSIONS (FILMED)

As the heat of the sun subsides, we'll head back out for an evening sunset surf session.

Building upon the foundations set in the morning, loose and agile from a day of action, the group will hit the water to trade waves as the sun sets behind.

VIDEO BREAKDOWN

Grab a beer, smoothie or juice as we'll sit down as a group and breakdown the footage from the day.

Frame by frame our expert coaches will discover any bad technical habits, unearth any blindspots, and create a crystal clear pathway of progression moving forward.

DINNER

With sore arms, big smiles, and sun-drenched bodies we'll convene for dinner lovingly prepared by our in-house local cooks.

A chance to chat, laugh, and dissect the day's events - ready to do it all again tomorrow.

SIMEULUE ISLAND

UNTOUCHED, UNCROWDED PERFECTION

WHAT TYPE OF WAVES WILL WE BE SURFING?

Our unique location on the island puts us right in the middle of a number of world class waves.

Each has their own unique flavour and works in different tides, winds, swell directions ect, and there's plenty to go around for different levels too.

Here's a breakdown of what to expect:

THE PEAK

SUITABLE FOR: BEGINNER - ADVANCED

A perfect, playful A-Frame peak with open walls perfect for turns and hollow barrel sections too.

A swell magnet that picks up any/all swell on offer - if everywhere else is flat, there'll be waves here.

DYLAN'S RIGHT

SUITABLE FOR: INTERMEDIATE - ADVANCED

A user friendly, perfect, mechanical right hander.

Although a relatively short wave, what it lacks in length it makes up for in quality. When it’s working, it offers flawless shape and extreme consistency with easy barrel sections rippable walls.

During the main surf season, it’s one of the more consistent reefs in the area as well as being one of the region’s most popular waves.

ONE-THONG'S

SUITABLE FOR: INTERMEDIATE - ADVANCED

One Thong is an extremely consistent left hander that's nestled in a picture perfect bay.

Being such a swell magnet it's certainly a fun option when the surf is small.

For sure this isn't the reason most surfers travel to Sumatra but its never crowded, is extremely user friendly and can be an excellent option for progressing beginner-intermediates or those surfing reef breaks for the first time.

THAILAND'S LEFT

SUITABLE FOR: INTERMEDIATE - ADVANCED

Breaking in deep water, this 200m ride offers long and playful walls, perfect for those looking for a cruisey session or those new to surfing over reef.

Suitable for most abilities and wave craft – it’s a consistent spot, with an easy take-off and enough variety to keep most surfers happy.

Set in a very scenic location which with its iridescent colours & live coral is certainly worth a trip just for the snorkelling.

PARADISE AWAITS

ACCOMODATION

We are staying at a small resort that has a maximum of 12 guests at any one time. You will be in a nice villa with air conditioning, ceiling fans, private bathroom with hot-water and western toilet, mini bar fridge, TV, lounge area and Wifi.

The setup is twin share, with 2 comfortable single beds in each bedroom, or for couples a double bed.

Three large meals will be served each day -a mix of traditional and western cuisine of seafood, meat, and vegetarian dishes.

Vegetarian or gluten free dishes can be provided if needed, just specify at time of booking if required.

Unlimited purified water, tea, and coffee are also provided.

Extra Fruit and Snacks can easily be brought at camp or nearby stores.

For entertainment between surf sessions, cable TV, table tennis, darts, books & assorted games are all available - plus WiFi too.

There is a beach break out the front, it’s not as good as the other waves we surf but can be fun at times and is great for a swim.

GETTING THERE

Although the island is off the beaten track, it is actually quite easy to get to and no long drives are required.

You will need to fly to Medan (KNO) which is accessible from many places.

From New Zealand, the best way is either Auckland – Singapore – Medan on Singapore Airlines and Silk Air, or Auckland – Kuala Lumpur – Medan on Malaysian Airlines.

The Singapore or KL to Medan flights are only around 1 hours duration and are inexpensive.

Flying to Medan from Bali is also an option but may require 2 short flights.

If flying Malaysian Airlines it's easiest if you time your flight to Medan to arrive in the morning of Aug 19th, that way you can then catch the daily 12:45 Wings Air flight to the island and avoid staying overnight in KL or Medan.

On Singapore airlines you will probably need to stay a night in Singapore on the way up.

Once in Medan you will meet the rest of the group and make the 1 hour Wings Air flight to the Island where surf resort staff will pick you up.

For the return journey home it is often necessary to stay a night in Medan. If so, there are great inexpensive hotels and it is all very straightforward.

The cost of these flights is not included in the package but we will provide more detailed information and will help ensure everything runs smoothly.

PACKING CHECKLIST

You will need to bring your own surfboard/s and own gear.

Whatever you normally surf at your home break will be fine for what we need here, and if you have a spare board you can bring with you by all means bring it along just incase of any damages along the way.

Below are a few additional bits you'll want to prepare too:

  • Travel Insurance is a must have for everyone on this trip.
  • Bring a quality wetsuit vest for colder mornings, reef and sun protection.
  • Ladies, this is Muslim territory so bring some surf leggings and long sleeve rash vest to surf in. More info will be provided on suitable clothing to bring in the trip notes.
  • Spare fins, legropes, fin keys, wax are a must. There will be no surf shops on the island.
  • Reef boots from a surf shop are a good idea and will make getting in and out a lot easier until you get used to the breaks. Not essential, but a good option.
  • Mosquito repellent and light long sleeve tops/long pants.
  • Bring a first aid kit to deal with any reef cuts.
  • Pack as light as possible – sometimes the flights have weight restrictions.

* the above is an overview, a detailed packing list and trip information document will be supplied closer to the time.
