Why Learn to Surf in Mount Maunganui?

Mount Maunganui is one of the best places to learn to surf in New Zealand, if not the best.

And here's why...

Because of the big continental shelf of the East coast, the waves in the Mount are mellow, slow moving and perfect for learning to surf.

With the open beaches stretching from the Mauao, all the way to Makatu, there are plenty of spots to surf with crowds never being a problem.

The most popular spots to surf are:

- Main beach

- Tay Street

- Hart Street (which is where we're located)

- The Pony Club

Surf conditions in Mount Maunganui

The surf season is between October to May.  During this time, the waves are consistently within the 1-3 foot range.  Whats more, the prevailing winds during the surf season are offshore (this makes the waves clean and easy to ride), which is perfect for surf lessons.

Plus, with the Mount receiving more sunshine each year than anywhere else in NZ, and the water temperature during this time ranges between 99 and 99 too!

Safe and secure

Not only are the beaches perfect for learning to surf, but they're also regularly patrolled by lifeguards too.

And unlike many other beaches, here in the Mount you never have to worry about flash rips as the beaches are very flat, and virtually rip free.

What's different about our surf lessons?

The House of Surf mission is to push womens surfing and get as many women into the water to experience the invigorating feeling of learning to surf.

We are the only all womens surf school based in Mount Maunganui providing surf lessons and a strong womens surf network so we can all encourage one another to spend more time out in the water doing what we love.

The beauty of our surf lessons in Mount Maunganui is that we are mobile surf school.

So if the waves are firing somewhere else, we can pack the car and head to the best break.

This enables our surf lessons to be held at the best location for day. Maximising our students results and enjoyment.

And, let's be honest...

Surfing is a lot less intimidating when your getting taught by women.

What to expect?

Our surf coaching is centred around an holistic approach to learning how to surf.

We use surfing as our medium to empower women to become their fullest potential, with the hope of creating wellbeing in all areas of lives.

We see surfing, not just about turning the surfboard but what is does to each and everyone of us on a soul level.

At the core of all of our coaching we stand for the know more, do more which translate too (with more knowledge, awareness and understanding we have, the more we can achieve).

Our surf coaching incorporates 8 key pillars all of which are an embodiment of the mind, body and soul, with a safe and nurturing space for you to explore your own potential.

Do we have a method of teaching?

House of Surf 8 key pillars of learning to surf efficiently.

Can I turn up and pay?

All surf packages are to be paid in full before commencing.

No money is excepted on the beach.

Do you supply equipment?

No, sorry not at this time. If you do wish to hire a surbfoard or wetsuit I can recommend these places:

1. Mount Backpackers

2. South Pacific Surf School

Can I expect to improve my surfing?

Good surf tuition is fundemental to your surf progression.

These lessons are a great way to identify your weaknesses and build on your strenghts.

Are the lessons structured?

Yes to a certain degree.

Each student has their own obejective for the lesson. The coach works closley to their cirtiertia as well as addtional imput if needed.

As with all tuition here at the House of Surf, our priorty is to make sure surfng is fun and enjoyable for everyone.

What's your refund policy?

All bookings outside 30 days can be confirmed with a non-refundable 30% deposit via our website. The balance must be paid in full 14 days before the start of the programme. In some instances, we might credit your fee for later use, but this will be on a case-by-case basis.

Do I need to sign a disclaimer?

Yes. One disclaimer for the lesson with all the paritcipants name and signature is enough.

What happens if there's no surf?

We encourage surfers not to get too picky about the forecast because perfect waves aren’t necessarily best for coaching.

If conditions are unsurfable and we need to postpone the lesson, we’re more than happy to reschedule for a future date.

Where do we meet?

The location is mobile, between Mount Maunganui and Papamoa.

This is to help ensure we are surfing the best condtions possible.

What do I need to bring?

You'll need to bring your surfboard, wetsuit (if it's cold), a water bottle and sunscreen.

How to do you teach the lessons?

The Intermediate lessons are taught via video. So all tuition is done from the beach.

All beginner lessons are taught with your instructor in the water.

Can I buy a lesson as a gift?

Absoultely. This is a great gift for women surfers who are looking to imporve their surfing.

What kind of areas of surfing will we be working on for each of the different levels?

Download the Surf Better chart here.
