WHY LEARN TO SURF IN MOUNT MAUNGANUI?

Main Beach Mount Maunganui

Mount Maunganui is one of the best places to learn to surf in New Zealand, if not the best.

And here's why...

Because of the big continental shelf of the East coast, the waves in the Mount are mellow, slow moving and perfect for learning to surf.

With the open beaches stretching from Mauao, all the way to Makatu, there are plenty of spots to surf with crowds never being a problem.

SURF CONDITIONS & WHAT TO EXPECT

The surf season runs from October to May.  During this time, the waves are consistently within the 1-3 foot range. Whats more, the prevailing winds during the surf season are offshore (this makes the waves clean and easy to ride), which is perfect for surf lessons.

Plus, with the Mount receiving more sunshine each year than anywhere else in NZ, and the water temperature during the summer months ranges between 19°C and 22°C (66 to 72°F) too, make this the most ideal location to learn to surf in NZ.

SAFE AND SECURE

Not only are the beaches in Mount Maunganui perfect for learning to surf, but they're also regularly patrolled by lifeguards too.

And unlike many other beaches, here in the Mount you never have to worry about flash rips as the beaches are very flat, and virtually rip free - perfect for learning to surf!

Yes, we do! You can rent all kinds of surf boards from us: From 9ft through to 6ft soft surfboards.

What do I need to bring?

All the equipment you need for surfing is provided! Some suggestions include casual swimwear to wear under your wetsuit, a towel, and plenty of water and sunscreen (we have both if you forget).

What time should i arrive for the lesson?

We ask that you show up 30 minutes before lesson start time. This is to fit you with the wetsuit, sign waivers and meet your instructor. This time allows you to get the routine stuff out of the way, so we can get you in the water shredding sooner!

Your activity will run rain or shine.

Yes, we really do embrace the elements here at the House of Surf.

What if i have surfed before?

whats the difference between a group or private lesson?

Our lesson times vary every day depending upon the tides. Check our timetable here.

whats happens if the surf is big and scary?

We will only take you in conditions that are safe for learning. Most of our beginner lessons start in chest deep water.  We will monitor the waves before and during your lesson and if at any time we see that it’s approaching too big, we will get everyone out of the water and reschedule.

Safety and fun are our highest priorities, if at any time you do not feel safe or are not having fun, we will stop and see what we can do!
